Once upon a time somewhere not here there were crab-like robots and hard-edge robots. They both thought they were human and got off on invading each other’s planets. Exhausted from battle, the hard-edge robots form jellyfish cocoons and ultimately destroy the crab-like robots’ planet. This, naturally, led to the infamous chicken event that caused the suppression of the local robot defence system. One of the chicken larva does not transform into an adult and instead roams the planet wearing robot armour.

Who will conquer all? Will it be crabs? The Hard-edge robots? Those assorted robot ladies? The mysterious robot armour chicken ?

All will be revealed in Xi Chen’s delirious sci-fi computer animated thriller, Chicken of the Mound

Look, I just need to stop here and be honest with you. I don’t know how to describe this film in a way that will make it all clear and concise. All I know is that Chicken of the Mound is weirdly hypnotic, unlike any feature I’ve seen before. At times the experience is akin to being shrunk and tossed inside a child’s imaginary playscape. You have no idea who the creatures are or what the story is but there’s something utterly engaging and mind-blowingly imaginative about it all. At other times, you just sit back and observe it all, it transforms into some post-apocalyptic/ sci-fi nature documentary with Xi Chen’s minimalist, toneless narration substituting for the emotional verbosity of David Attenborough.

Chicken of the Mound is a glorious piece of animated bizarro that you didn’t know you badly need to experience. (Frank Remley)

Ils croyaient tous deux être humains, et se sont donné pour mission d’envahir la planète de l’autre. Naturellement, ceci mène au fameux événement du poulet, qui a causé la suppression du système de défense local des robots. Bon. Je dois m’arrêter un instant et être honnête avec vous : je ne sais pas comment décrire ce film d’une façon claire et concise. Tout ce que je sais, c’est que Chicken of the Mound est drôlement hypnotisant, et qu’il ne ressemble à aucun autre long métrage que j’aie vu dans ma vie. Il y a des moments où l’expérience s’apparente à la sensation d’être soûl et jeté dans le terrain de jeu imaginaire d’un enfant. Vous n’avez aucune idée de ce que sont les créatures ou du déroulement de l’histoire, mais il y a quelque chose d’extrêmement engageant et d’incroyablement imaginatif à ce film. Il y a d’autres moments où vous observez simplement le tout passivement, et que ça se transforme en genre de documentaire de science-fiction sur la nature post-apocalyptique, fidèle à la narration minimaliste et sans tons de Xi Chen, qui remplace la verbosité émotionnelle de David Attenborough.

Chicken of the Mound est un glorieux morceau d’animation fantasque auquel vous ne saviez pas qu’il vous fallait goûter. (Frank Remley)
