Told in 14 instalments, Blood of the Family Tree is an experimental narrative that explores intergenerational memory and history. Familial bonds, particularly those between women, are visualized using recurring motifs like blood, trees, and the body. This imagery takes on varied meanings as the film considers the role of blood as a life force, as a sign of trauma, and as a carrier of hereditary traits and illness.

There is a weight to these stories of inheritance, but also a beauty. Acclaimed animator, Christine Panushka acknowledges this in her first feature by treating instances of pain and solace with the same simple line work. A combination of hand-painted animation, writing, mapping, and textile honour the varied ways in which knowledge is passed down a bloodline. There is also poetry in the oscillation between the micro and the macro. An abstract mess of lines might look like the nervous system, or the roots of a plant, or thread being pulled through some handiwork. Blood of the Family Tree asks what it means to feel history—both the intimate personal history that courses through one's veins, and the shared stories or experiences that connect us to others.
