Elulu - Director Introduction

When a man returns to his family home after the loss of his mother, reality unravels as memory and fantasy take hold. Stories of childhood are unearthed, a painting comes to life, and a magic caterpillar named Elulu inhabits the house. What will come of our protagonist as he revisits past lives and makes sense of profound loss in the presence of a quartet of enchanted creatures? In this state of mourning, pursuing a career in theoretical physics and feeding his pet cats would be energy-consuming enough, but Elulu also needs something from him... Inspired by string theory, Elulu is equal parts emotional and cerebral. Gabriel Verdugo Soto’s use of painterly and photorealistic animation styles complements a narrative that drifts between physical and metaphysical worlds. As the film unfolds through flashbacks, magic realism, and intimate moments portraying everyday life, Elulu meditates on the nature of consciousness and grief. Les histoires d’enfance émergent, une peinture s’anime et une chenille magique appelée Elulu habite dans la maison. Qu’arrivera-t-il à notre protagoniste alors qu’il redécouvre des vies passées et qu’il trouve un sens de perte profonde en présence d’un quatuor de créatures enchantées? Dans son état de deuil, poursuivre une carrière en physique théorique et nourrir ses chats demanderait assez de son énergie, mais Elulu a aussi besoin de quelque chose de sa part... Inspiré par la théorie des cordes, Elulu est à parts égales émotionnel et cérébral. L’emploi de styles d’animation picturaux et photo réalistes par Gabriel Verdugo Soto complémente une narration qui flotte entre les mondes physique et métaphysique. Alors que se déroule le film le long de retours en arrière, de réalisme magique et de moments intimes illustrant la vie quotidienne, Elulu médite sur la nature de la conscience et du deuil.
